Change permissions on some files in windows\inf folder
Hello! When I try to give the administrators group full control to some files in the C:\Windows\Inf folder, thepermissions isnt saved when i click ok and close the properties dialog, how come? The files Im trying to change permissions on is: C:\Windows\inf\infpub.dat C:\Windows\inf\infstor.dat C:\Windows\inf\infstrng.dat C:\Windows\inf\drvindex.dat C:\Windows\inf\INFCACHE.1 I use Windows Vista home edition 32bit. The reason why I want to change permissions on these files is because i cant install drivers for my new Canon Pixma MP970 printer and i suspect the current permissions (only SYSTEM has full control)has something to do with it.I suspect it because a few months ago i deleted these files in order to be able to installsome USB devices i also had trouble with.

Hi, Regarding the C:\Windows\inf folder, it is normal and by design that users cannot modify the overall security permission of this folder. Instead, you need to locate particular sub-folders or certain files so as to modify related user's/group's permissions. As for the Canon Pixma MP970 printer that you cannot install, I strongly suggest you contact the Canon support for detailed information about whether the driver you are using is incompatible with Windows Vista and how to install the driver in a correct manager. Here is an related article for your reference: You cannot install a device driver by using its installation program in Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927524 You are also welcome to come back to this forum if you have further problems or concern on Windows Vista. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Robbin Meng Microsoft Online Community Support

Hi and thanks for your answer! Im not trying to change permissions on the C:\windows\inf folder itself, just the afforementioned files in it. I alsoknow that the printer driver is compatible with Vista because it is a brand new printer model, the installation instructions says its compatibleAND i have successfully installed the drivers on a Asus laptopthat hasVista. I appreciate more suggestions and regardless of whether changing permissions on the files in C:\windows\inf wouldsolve my problem or not, im curious why i cant change permissions. Plus, is it normal that only the SYSTEM user has full control? There is only one other permission on these files and that is read permissionfor theusers group. Maybe I also shouldmention that after spendinghours on thisdriver problem, itried to install SP1 RC refresh for Vista. It didnt work. When the computer had restarted and was 10-15% in on step 1 of the installation, it failed and i had to do a system restore to getthe computer to function like before. Something doesnt seem right.

I looked at thepermissions on the files i mentioned before in windows\inf folder on my laptop and they have the exact same permissions as my desktop computer so it cant be the security settings that is wrong since the drivers installed perfectly on my laptop. Thatsaid, this thread is now in the wrong forum...
